What is butryn?
Butrans skin patches contain buprenorphine, an opioid pain medication. An opioid is sometimes called a narcotic. Butrans skin patches are used for around-the-clock treatment of moderate to severe chronic pain that is not controlled by other medicines. Butrans is not for use on an as-needed basis for pain.

Is buprenorphine bad for your liver?
Therapy with buprenorphine is associated with mild and transient serum enzyme elevations, and with moderate-to-severe clinically apparent liver injury when abused by intravenous administration or the sublingual formations.
Can you take buprenorphine orally?
Buprenorphine is an opioid medication. Buprenorphine oral/sublingual (given under the tongue) is used to treat opioid addiction. Other forms of buprenorphine are used to treat moderate to severe pain. Buprenorphine sublingual is not for use as a pain medication.
